Job Description
The Australian Financial Review is looking for a talented reporter to join our Wealth team.
With the Baby Boomer retirement wave reaching a peak and the great wealth transfer under way, this role presents an exciting opportunity to cover key topics like superannuation, estate planning, investment strategies, property and transition to life post-work.
You will provide lively reporting about personal finance generally but especially issues that matter to pre-retirees and retirees. You must be able to take developments in economics, government policy and financial markets and translate their effects to the financial lives of our discerning audience. The successful candidate will thrive on finding case studies, sourcing expert commentary and digging up compelling data.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, dynamic team at the forefront of subscriber engagement, using the best digital storytelling to appeal to both existing and new readers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and explore key themes in personal finance, with a focus on the needs and concerns of people in their mid- to late-career stages and beyond.
- Pitch and write stories that bring these themes to life, incorporating graphics, case studies, and other storytelling techniques.
- Craft engaging and informative content that entertains and educates digital audiences, with compelling intros and attention-grabbing headlines.
- Stay abreast of economic, political, and financial market developments, using this knowledge to create relevant, timely content that features real-life stories and practical advice.
- Collaborate with the wider team, offering support across various tasks, adapting to feedback, and learning from readership data.
Qualifications
What we would like to see:
- Proven experience as a journalist or content producer, ideally with a background in financial services or personal finance.
- Excellent writing skills, including strong attention to sentence structure, grammar, and spelling.
- Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience with digital storytelling formats is a plus.
- A proactive, detail-oriented approach with a willingness to take on new challenges.
- A positive, collaborative attitude, with an interest in contributing to value-add activities such as events and podcasts.
