Job Description
The Australian Financial Review is looking for an experienced editor with strong news judgement and broad knowledge across politics, business, culture and the arts. Review draws on a range of syndication sources and contributors to keep AFR readers up to date with the best writing from across the world. You’ll also provide editorial support to other sections, including National, World, Perspective and AFR Weekend. Day-to-day, you’ll work alongside other editors, reporters and production journalists on everything from editing breaking news to overseeing a lengthy feature or interview.
Your primary duties will be:
- Coordinating coverage for Review and where required, other sections of AFR
- Planning and editing stories
- Working with the photo desk, graphics and the online team to optimise content and presentation.
- Ensuring syndication and contributor agreements are maintained
- Monitoring breaking news and updating coverage as necessary
- Ensuring the accuracy and quality of all content
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience as an editor in a major newsroom
- Deep understanding of news and current affairs, particularly geopolitics
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
This is a 12-month contract covering a staff member on extended leave. Applications are
welcome from candidates who would prefer to work part-time. Some Sunday rostering will be
required.
