Job Description
The Australian Financial Review production team is responsible for presenting high-quality news, features and opinion pieces to our digital and print audience. This includes editing and publishing articles and updating the AFR homepage. The homepage editor is responsible for maintaining AFR.com, ensuring it is dynamic, engaging, and up to date with breaking news and key stories. You will play a pivotal role in shaping how our journalism is presented to readers across digital platforms, working closely with editors and reporters.
In this role you will:
- Update the AFR homepage, ensuring content is fresh, accurate, and engaging.
- Edit and publish stories, including first takes and updates, maintaining high editorial standards.
- Collaborate with editors and reporters to enhance stories for digital platforms.
- Write and optimise story sells including headlines, SEO elements, and write-offs to drive audience engagement.
- Use data analytics to monitor story performance.
- Monitor news wires and other sources.
- Attend news conferences and contribute to coverage planning.
- Add multimedia assets (photos, videos, social media posts) to stories and write engaging captions.
- Post on social channels and curate newsletters, as required.
Qualifications
What we would like to see in your resume:
- Experience in a major newsroom as a homepage editor, sub-editor and/or digital producer/journalist.
- A strong understanding of news and current affairs for an Australian audience. Knowledge of business journalism or financial markets is preferred but not essential
- Experience writing and managing live blogs, or demonstrated ability to contribute to blogs
- Excellent knowledge of the English language, grammar and syntax.
- A working understanding of social media.
- Experience using data/analytics to improve headlines, story sells and homepage placement is preferred but not essential
- An understanding of legal best practices, including defamation laws.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
