Job Description
The Newsletter Editor will oversee the delivery of The Australian Financial Review’s editorial newsletters, ensuring their quality, accuracy, and timely distribution. You will work in collaboration with senior editors, ensuring alignment with editorial priorities and leveraging data-driven insights. Using your experience and expertise in this area, you will identify opportunities to enhance and evolve the strategy, focusing on expanding the AFR’s subscriber base.
In this role you will:
- Work with the premium content editor to develop and deliver the AFR's newsletter strategy.
- Supervise the delivery of daily newsletters, including writing, curating and editing newsletters, as required.
- Proofread newsletters and make decisions on length, format and tone following our style guide.
- Attend news conferences and other meetings with senior editors to plan newsletter coverage.
- Serve as the main point of contact for all AFR editorial newsletters for editorial and other teams.
- Educate newsrooms on the importance of newsletters to a subscription strategy.
- Train staff in the production and writing of newsletters.
- Work closely with other teams (data, product and tech, subscriptions) to monitor and communicate performance insights via regular reporting, improve reader-facing features, and coordinate newsletter promotion.
Qualifications
What we would like to see:
- Demonstrated experience in editorial newsletter delivery and/or strategy.
- A strong understanding of news and current affairs for an Australian audience. Knowledge of business journalism or financial markets is preferred but not essential.
- Understanding of data/analytics and what drives newsletter engagement and subscription conversions.
- Strong editorial judgement; ability to absorb complex ideas and distil them into accessible copy for different audiences.
- Solid organisational skills; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage complex processes, and meet both short-term and long-term deadlines
- Proven experience in digital article production, homepage editing, social media, and/or sub-editing will be looked upon favourably.
- An understanding of legal best practices, including defamation laws.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- A working understanding of audience strategy and off-platform referrers is desirable.
- Experience delivering training to other staff or aptitude for developing those skills.
