Job Description
The Sydney Morning Herald is seeking a part-time, 3-day a week sub-editor/digital producer to sub-edit, rewrite copy, source and add digital assets to articles and publish them in our fast-paced newsroom. The role would suit someone who thrives in a breaking news environment working to tight deadlines.
Day to day you will:
- Review stories in the content management system with an intense focus on quality and deadlines
- Identify errors or mistakes in stories
- Write engaging and accurate SEO headlines, write-offs/precedes, and captions to improve audience engagement with our stories
- Liaise with reporters and topic editors to edit stories and rework copy
- Enhance stories with other assets such as photographs, videos, graphics, multimedia and key points
- Co-operate with production editor(s) to ensure the flow of work will meet deadlines
- Monitor blogs as required to ensure live copy is error-free and of high quality
- Please note this role may work across morning, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts.
Qualifications
What we would like to see:
- Previous experience in sub-editing and production for online publishing
- Excellent knowledge of the English language, grammar and syntax
- Understanding of legal best-practice including defamation and contempt laws
- Ability to work quickly and accurately to deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Experience in print production (copy-fitting and/or basic layout) is desirable but not essential.
