Job Description
The property team at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age is looking for a Deputy Property Editor who will help shape our coverage and assume a leadership role in the team.
The ideal candidate takes a keen interest in the state of the housing market and will be able to explain its ups and downs to a highly engaged audience. This is a varied role that includes both writing and editing, as well as helping curate a mix of stories covering everything from house price movements to buying and selling trends, the rental crisis, the best suburbs and the prestige property market.
Reporting to the national property editor, this is a Tuesday to Saturday position that includes editing auction coverage on Saturdays, regularly working the 11am-7pm Saturday shift. In the national property editor’s absence, the property news editor will act in the role. The position would suit someone keen to gain editing experience and take on more responsibility in the newsroom.
This position is also open to applicants based in Melbourne
In this role you will:
- Pitch original stories for self and others, including national and local stories, daily and longer-term projects to suit publication in both Sydney and Melbourne.
- Write news leads and collaborate with the national property editor on copy flows.
- Develop and maintain relationships with contacts to generate story ideas.
- Consider feedback from analytics in shaping story selection.
- Work with data, ensuring accuracy and clarity in reporting.
- Stay informed on property market trends and develop skills in writing analysis.
- Collaborate on headlines, graphics, and story treatment with the national property editor.
Qualifications
- A keen interest in the property market, and either a broad knowledge of the topic and a range of contacts - or a willingness to learn fast.
- Newsroom experience and a track record as a self-starter who can work independently, generate ideas, report and write stories with complexity and depth.
- Strong news judgement and an ability to problem-solve.
- Experience meeting deadlines and working with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent copy and strong attention to detail.
- Some experience editing others’ copy and writing headlines, or an enthusiasm to learn.
