Job Description
The State Political Editor role is for a highly motivated, experienced team leader who can combine breaking news, analysis and feature writing capability at the highest-level across our digital and print platforms with enhancing team performance, productivity and quality of work.
Day to day you will:
- Generate unique content ideas for the daily and weekly news cycle
- Regularly break agenda-setting exclusive stories
- Prepare clear, accurate, balanced, well-written and well-researched reports
- Demonstrate willingness to meet the needs of a modern, 24-hour, digital news outlet
- Demonstrate excellent news judgement and knowledge of current affairs.
- Ensure the highest standard of accuracy, ethics and editorial quality.
- Develop and manage relationships with political and public service contacts
- Meet agreed audience benchmarks and deadlines.
- Communicate expectations, goals and feedback to the team. regularly, while fostering a sense of collaboration and accountability.
- Coordinate and support the team to achieve high-performance.
- Make strategic decisions to ensure team success.
Qualifications
We are seeking an experienced journalist and team leader with relevant contacts in Victorian politics and the ability to have authority across a range of subjects including state politics, the economy, health and transport.
What we would like to see on your resume:
- Strong journalistic background with demonstrated writing experience. Previous history with political reporting preferred.
- Strong leadership and organisational skills.
- Contacts in Victorian politics
- First rate news judgement.
- Proven ability to identify, articulate and develop quality stories.
Ability to work collaboratively across The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and various national Metro teams
