Pedestrian Group/Full-time

Pedestrian Group, Australia’s largest youth publisher, is looking for an outstanding and ambitious Senior Reporter to join the VICE Australia team.

Reporting to the Head of Editorial, the right person for this role has a background in – and first-hand experience of – reporting in Australia, principally concerning the issues facing the generation below 35 years-old: housing, climate change, jobs, culture, and sustainability.

This is our audience, and we’re looking to tell stories that directly impact and interest them.

You will be tasked with seeking out exclusive stories and writing engaging feature pieces. You will also work across different platforms and help mentor our growing team.

The Senior Reporter will be required to:

  • Bring in exclusive news stories
  • Juggle shorter pieces, enterprise reporting, and features
  • Have a willingness to be deployed across Australia
  • Work across different publishing platforms
  • Step in to edit where appropriate

The right person for this role will have experience covering at least two of the following core areas:

  • Housing, renter’s rights, housing affordability
  • Protests
  • Climate change and underrepresented communities
  • The power structures that shape what it means to live in Australia in the 2020s.
  • The institutional and social forces that drive racial inequality, and the movements combating them
  • Australian youth culture (actually, not just the stuff in the news)

The position calls for someone with:

  • 2-3 years experience working professionally as a news reporter
  • A clear idea of the stories that matter and how we approach them
  • Experience presenting stories visually and doing on-camera work (preferred, but not mandatory)
  • Experience as an editor or as a senior figure in an existing newsroom is not a requirement, but is a plus.

This is a full-time position based out of Pedestrian Group’s offices in either Sydney or Melbourne. Remote work will be considered for the right candidate.

To apply, please send us the following:

  • Your CV
  • A cover letter in your best understanding of the VICE tone of voice
  • A portfolio of relevant past work examples

We can’t wait to meet you.
