Pedestrian Group (Winner – Publishing Company of the Year, Mumbrella Publish Awards 2021) is on the lookout for an experienced Managing Editor to help shape PEDESTRIAN.TV’s news coverage and guide our team of fearless, hungry writers to all-new heights.

This senior role will be best suited to a media industry obsessive who understands the Australian news cycle, knows how to cover important, delicate topics that spark national conversations, and has innovative ideas on how to tell stories in new and impactful ways. The right candidate will also be just as passionate about formulating and executing audience growth strategies across a multitude of platforms.

The Managing Editor will be required to:

  • Work closely with the Head of Editorial to constantly challenge the team to conceive and execute the most cutting-edge content online, creating sharp programming that is voicey, shareable, and new, while being on brand for PEDESTRIAN.TV and deliver on traffic goals
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the editorial team, including overseeing a team of journalists to ensure quality output to deadline across key coverage areas
  • Work with the Head of Editorial and the Senior Audience Growth & Insights Manager to develop and drive audience acquisition strategies for the publication and its relevant platforms
  • Work with the SEO Manager to ensure that all content is optimised and follows best practice
  • In conjunction with the Head of Editorial, oversee day-to-day administrative matters, legal concerns and personnel issues for the editorial team
  • Identify and grow commercially attractive audience segments
  • Commission external freelance writers on original stories and feature articles and manage the onboarding and invoicing processes from end to end
  • Track and reconcile the associated commissioning budget
  • Along with the Head of Editorial, act as a liaison between branded content and editorial teams, approving pitch concepts, providing feedback and tweaking as needed
  • Undertake standard editorial duties (writing, editing, rewriting, generating story ideas) as needed

The position calls for someone with:

  • 4-5 years experience working in a fast-paced newsroom, with demonstrated people management experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing content delivery on multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Echobox
  • Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring staff writers, giving constructive feedback on ideas, stories, and style
  • Experience collaborating with colleagues on commercial concerns
  • Experience commissioning and collaborating with freelancers
  • Strong understanding of SEO
  • A working understanding of Australian media law and associated best practices
  • Exceptional editing skills, with an acute attention to detail
  • A Bachelor’s degree in media, communications, or journalism (preferred but not mandatory)

The role is a full-time position and is based out of Pedestrian Group’s offices in either Sydney or Melbourne.
