We are currently seeking applications for Design Room Assistant to support our Design Department. This is a career opportunity for a motivated and ambitious graduate to join our growing team, located in our Sydney studio (in Alexandria).

The successful candidate will have recently completed studies in Fashion Design or a similar tertiary degree incorporating aspects of fashion design and production processes. Previous industry experience (such as internships or placements) is not essential but will be viewed favourably.

Excellent communication skills are a key requirement and the applicant must have a driver’s license and vehicle. Strong organisational skills are a must as well as competence in all Adobe Creative Suite programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist and support the Matteau Design team across all categories
  • Assist and support the team in executing product through the development cycle to production
  • Participate in trends and research reporting and forecasting – show/runway, colour, print, etc
  • Assist with technical CAD sketches and colour ups
  • Set up and maintain all overviews/line sheets as required by the Matteau team, including range plan overview, category overview and factory overviews
  • Set up and maintain range collection boards – to be up to date at all times
  • Maintenance of design team WIP notes for team communication
  • Ensure season trackers are up to date with all information
  • Assisting design in the management of fabric and trim development, sourcing of fabric and trims, inputting data into relevant trackers and filing of all information
  • Ensure sustainability and environmental credentials of all suppliers is up to date to ensure sustainable sourcing practices are maintained
  • Assist with accessory, trim and fabric sampling + production purchasing
  • Undertake visits, deliveries and pick-ups with local manufacturers
  • Data input of all fabric and accessory details into ERP system, set up of products in ERP system
  • Assist with preparation of garments, cut sheets and tech packs throughout the sampling stage
  • Set up fittings with fit model, pattern makers and assist in communicating fit notes and photos
  • Assist with preparing packs + studio storage reference library for all sampling fabrics, trims + accessories
  • Assist with performance wear and wash testing each season where required
  • Assist with packing all trims and accessories for SMS + production sample packs
  • Assist in sample archiving and management – tag and organise seasonal sample prototypes, SMS samples, pre-production samples, PR and marketing samples
  • Organise pressing/steaming of all SMS samples when necessary
  • Assist SMS co-ordination + allocation
  • Assist to QC shippers when required
  • Organise and prepare DHL, Aust Post and Courier parcels
  • General admin and other ad hoc duties
  • Run errands as necessary
  • Purchase office and design room office supplies, patternmaking and cutting supplies 

Additional responsibilities

  • Assist in e-commerce photo shoots in studio where required – prepare samples, steam/iron samples and provide styling assistance to photography team
  • Longer hours will be required at certain periods or in the lead up to events

  • Strong personal presentation and grooming standards
  • Extremely organised and strong attention to detail
  • Understanding of patternmaking and strong garment construction knowledge
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to maintain strong relationships with suppliers and makers
  • Forward thinking and able to anticipate issues and threats
  • Good knowledge of Excel, Word, Google Docs, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • A valid driver’s licence is a MUST
